Mike has a unique ability to work with people across the globe, uniting them under the common sky we all share. His vision and dedication have inspired countless others to see astronomy not only as science, but also as a way to build community and hope.

1. Thanks to A4E’s support, the five telescopes provided enabled more than 1,000 students across 16 schools and scout camps in Tripoli and Benghazi to observe the Moon and planets for the very first time.

2. The virtual meeting with astronaut Nicole Stott had a tremendous motivational impact on our young female students, many of whom now aspire to continue their studies in science and engineering.

3. Most recently, A4E’s eclipse glasses were distributed not only to students but also to African migrants and IDPs those displaced by the floods in Derna.
This was more than scientific empowerment—it provided moments of recovery, joy, and psychological support for our community.

Mike Simmons’ vision has always been profoundly human—seeing astronomy as a means to empower, educate, and unite communities often left at the margins of science. Through Astronomy for Equity, he continues to turn that belief into action, creating opportunities that remind us that the night sky belongs to all of us, equally.

Astronomy for Equity is a wonderful initiative by Mike Simmons that shows how astronomy can be used not only to inspire and educate the public about astronomy and science, but also to bring hope, opportunity, resources, and networks for a better future, especially in communities that are often left behind or in under-resourced countries. Astronomy for Equity helps people use the sky as a gateway to education, inclusion, and empowerment.

I’ve known Mike Simmons since 2008. I praise and celebrate Mike Simmons’ initiative in creating the wonderful project “Astronomy for Equity (A4E)”. Projects that include people with disabilities and those living in conflict-affected and underserved regions in the scientific field are a contemporary necessity. This project brings hope for a better future to thousands of people worldwide.
