Astronomy for Equity Presentation at the Triennial IAU General Assembly

Mike Simmons, founder of Astronomy for Equity, gave a presentation at the International Astronomical Union’s (IAU) 2024 General Assembly in Cape Town, South Africa that introduced the organization’s groundbreaking global initiative to make astronomy accessible to blind and low-vision (BLV) communities worldwide.

“Is this really a visual science or not?” asked Simmons. “All these [celestial objects] we are blind to. We turn them into visual representations, but they don’t have to be done that way” he said, challenging the traditional sensory assumptions in astronomy.

While astronomy is highly accessible and serves as a natural introduction to STEM, millions of BLV individuals remain excluded due to a lack of inclusive materials and outreach coordination, creating a critical gap in science communication. 

Astronomy for Equity works with communities to bridge this gap, through tactile analogs and 3D printed models. During his presentation, Simmons further advocated for marginalized communities by noting that “The ones that we’re not reaching are usually the ones that need it the most.”

By continuing discussions on the breakdown of gaps in science communication at the IAU 2024 General Assembly, Astronomy for Equity continues its core mission to create a world where every individual has the opportunity to reach their fullest potential and achieve extraordinary success, regardless of their background or circumstances.
