Astronomy for Blind and Low Vision

Program description

Overview

Everyone is interested in astronomy, including those who are blind or have low vision. Occasionally, astronomy outreach programs decide to create tactile and sound resources to include them. But they are reinventing the wheel, unaware of existing resources and practitioners.

The Community Hub for Astronomy with Blind and Low Vision Audiences brings together ongoing outreach astronomy programs from around the world to share resources and expertise on including blind and low vision people in their programs, bringing the cosmos down to Earth for thousands more people.

Program Mission

Our Mission

Everyone appreciates learning about the sky. And astronomy outreach groups worldwide are passionate about sharing the sky with others. But those who have heard so much about the sky and the stars but never seen them don’t have that chance when astronomy is only shared visually.

The Community Hub brings astronomy outreach groups together to share experience and existing resources. Mentors provide help in getting started working with this excluded group, giving thousands of people the life-changing experience of learning our place in the Universe. They learn the sky is curved, get a feel (literally) for the size of lunar craters and the sizes of the planets, and much more. Things the sighted take for granted.
